Our Story
At Altered States Fitness & Karate, our mission is to inspire our community to see karate training and physical fitness conditioning as a means of maintaining life long good physical and mental health.
Our training incorporates 'original' Okinawan Karate practices meaning that we put a spotlight on building practical skills for managing domestic and civil violence (not to be mistaken as sports karate).
For kids this might mean dealing with the school bully. For men and women this might mean being better prepared physically and mentally if ever faced with the random acts of violence that currently plague our community.
If self-defence is not your motivation, karate training does offer the practitioner with an interesting alternative to the mainstream fitness culture as well as learned physical movement skills that can be applied anywhere you feel inspired to train whether it be in the park or early morning on the beach.
What We Offer
Karate is the one activity that can be trained over an entire lifetime. Our youngest member to begin training was three when she started and our oldest member began when he was 75 years old.
Our programs are tailored to be age specific and lessons are taught in a safe learning environment specific to the activity.

Fitness Conditioning
Fitness & Conditioning are without doubt the only reason we are able to function at peak performance in our day to day lives. Without it life for many of us becomes a constant struggle. By implementing the CAN-I methodology (Continuous And Never ending Improvement) we begin to make significant changes in our lives starting with how we treat our physical bodies.
Our only goal is to help get you started and then helping you establish a new life habit that will keep you self-motivate in your personal fitness pursuits. Once you are there you won't need us anymore but, if you like, you can stay and hang out with us. We love the community we are building and quite frankly this is the underlying reason we continue doing what we do.
We offer a variety of training options, including group classes and personalized training programs, to help you achieve your fitness goals.
Adult Karate
Our adult karate program is built with purpose and shaped for certain societal realities of the 21st century. What we teach is not a sport-based system, but a vehicle for developing practical physical skill, strong fundamentals, and an opportunity for steady personal progress.
Whether you’re returning to training after years away, looking to cross train with your current style or just looking to step onto the mat for the first time, you’ll develop functional self-defence ability, improved mobility and body weight strength, and sharper focus — all within a structured, respectful environment.
Our curriculum is built from the principles of the original old school Okinawan karate, which encompassed striking, kicking, throwing and takedowns, ground work, and joint control.
Everything we teach is scalable to your current level of fitness and experience. Nothing is out of reach — provided you show up consistently with a learner’s mindset and a genuine curiosity to improve.
Massage Therapy
Massage therapy has been used for managing injury and illness for thousands of years. This ideal still holds true today. Regular sessions of massage therapy can be a game changer to managing and fighting off stress related illness that is the product of our ever increasing busy lives. Our onsite massage therapist provides services of remedial and sports massage, dry needling, cold/hot rock therapy and taping.
